The City of Fall River is proposing significant rate increases for water and sewer use beginning in July.
Costs for the city’s water and sewer system are paid for primarily by fees collected from residential and commercial users. Department of Community Utilities Director Paul Ferland says for the new year that begins in July, the city has been impacted by the rising cost of commodity items and hiring and retaining qualified employees.
Mr. Ferland says the average homeowner will see increases that are much higher than in years past.
Mr. Ferland says the fees cover the cost of providing safe drinking water and proper disposal of waste.
The cost of water and sewer service could actually be higher if it were not for the support from federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
As the weather gets warmer work will begin on water and sewer construction projects across the city. Mr. Ferland says one of the biggest projects this year is the replacement of water mains across the city.
Mr. Ferland says the city will also be undertaking the replacement of over 500 lead pipe services from the water main to the home. This service will be completed free of charge to all homeowners.
