The City of Fall River is joining with makers and innovators across the country in celebrating Global Entrepreneur Week.
Through the leadership of UMass Dartmouth and the SouthCoast Entrepreneurs Collaborative, Viva Fall River organized a day-long series of events marking the accomplishments of local entrepreneurs and promoting the expansion of business innovation.
Viva Fall River Director Patti Rego says Fall River has seen growth in new small business start-ups, particularly since the onset of the pandemic.
The events for Entrepreneurship Day on Wednesday began with an open house at Groundwork Creative Spaces, a community co-working space for entrepreneurs and freelancers to rent space for their work and collaborate on projects. The space is located within the former Durfee Tech and Bristol Community College building on Bank Street
Co-founder and owner Sarah Athanas says the community work area is an affordable way for entrepreneurs to conduct business while they grow.
This is the second Groundwork location open on the SouthCoast; the first was opened in New Bedford in 2014. Ms. Athanas says the Fall River location is about 50% full, with a diverse clientele.
Ms. Rego says even though Fall River has a history of large-scale manufacturing that has faded through the years, things are still being made by small companies in Fall River and innovation will be needed to expand in the future.
