The Fall River City Council last night took a public vote to support the referendum on the special city election ballot calling for Fall River to join the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) as part of the SouthCoast Rail project.
The council voted 8-1 to pass a resolution that recommends city voters support the referendum. The resolution was proposed by City Councilor Brad Kilby who said it is appropriate for the council to lend support for projects that will benefit the city.
City Councilor Michelle Dionne cast the lone no vote, saying it is inappropriate for the council to try to influence an issue before voters during an election.
Voters will receive a separate ballot that will only contain the MBTA question. A second ballot will be issued to residents to vote in the general state election.
