With the instances of new COVID infections on the decline, the Fall River City Council is looking to return to holding its meetings in person.
City Council Vice President Pam Laliberte Lebeau says City Council President Cliff Ponte plans for the council to begin meeting in-person later this month.
Councilor Laliberte Lebeau says there have been technological and practical challenges to holding meetings virtually, but the council has done well in conducting city business during the pandemic.
In terms of council priorities, Councilor Laliberte Lebeau says at the top of the list is ensuring the city continues to provide vital services to residents in the face of revenue shortfalls caused by the pandemic. She says there is no guarantee of future state or federal assistance coming to Fall River. To make ends meet, Mayor Paul Coogan and the city council have been looking at ways to increase revenue in a way that is fair and not dramatically impactful to city residents. One of them was taking a look at parking meter fees and fines.
Councilor Laliberte Lebeau says she appreciates meeting with Mayor Coogan ahead of city council meetings to get updates and insight into mayoral initiatives that will be before the council. She also is looking forward to a time when she and her colleagues will be able to focus on projects not related to the pandemic.
