Youngsters who are stricken with Type 1 diabetes have the opportunity to get the full summer camp experience at People, Incorporated’s Camp Jack.
Named for former local insurance agency executive and community supporter Jack Rua, Camp Jack was established in conjunction with the Diabetes Association and is held over six weeks at Camp Welch in Assonet beginning on July 10.
Camp Jack runs Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and is staffed with three nurses to care for the needs of the campers. The camp caters to those with Type 1 diabetes but there are openings for others to participate.
Campers are able to take part in the same activities that are found in “traditional” day camps.
Much of the financial support for Camp Jack comes from local chapters of the Lions Club.
55 youngsters per week can register to attend Camp Jack. There are currently no slots available for the week of July 17 and the week of August 14. Parents of children who have Type 1 diabetes can still register for the current openings at Camp Jack by calling 508-206-0564. Discounts and other financial aid are available.
