Fall River Police Chief Jeffrey Cardoza provided updates on a number of department initiatives during an interview with FRCMedia late last week.
Chief Cardoza says the department is still determining what protocols it needs to develop to comply with the new police reform law passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker last month.
The chief says that despite incidents that made news in recent months, violent crime in Fall River for 2020 declined compared to 2019.
Turnover has been a concern as the department has seen a large number of retirements. Cheirf Cardoza says plans have been underway to replace officers to ensure that the city’s complement remains at around 225.
The chief says work continues with his staff and the mayor’s office to build upon efforts made last summer in fostering cooperation between the police department and the community when it comes to serving minority and disenfranchised residents.
