With Thanksgiving in the rearview mirror, local social service organizations are seeking community support for programs that will aid those in need through the Christmas holiday season.
Citizens for Citizens, Inc. (CFC) is once again launching Operation Christmas, its annual toy drive to provide gifts for upwards of 4,000 Fall River area children. Program coordinator Chystal Arpa says families looking for help need to apply by December 8.
CFC is welcoming donations of new, unwrapped toys to their facility at 822 Eastern Avenue by December 16.
Ms. Arpa says monetary donations are also accepted. For more information on how to apply for the program or donate, call 508-675-2157, ext. 601.
The Salvation Army of Fall River has begun its famous Kettle Campaign at various stores across its service area. Captain Alexis Castillo says kettles will be staffed at large stores like Walmart, Stop & Shop, Shaws and Market Basket Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm throughout the holiday season. He says the number of locations that host kettles is less than in years past due to staffing limitations.
Along with the Kettle Campaign, The Salvation Army will replicate its Thanksgiving offering for Christmas by making food available to over 600 families so they can celebrate a holiday meal this season.
The Salvation Army will also be hosting a small holiday dinner at its 290 Bedford Street headquarters on December 20. The organization is no longer accepting applications for the holiday food distribution, but those needing assistance can still contact the Salvation Army at 508-678-7900 or follow them on their Facebook page.
