The surge in COVID cases is not deterring Bristol Community College from beginning its spring semester, as planned, this coming Monday.
As students and staff return, they face a vaccination and mask mandate for all in-person or hybrid classes. Some colleges are beginning the semester in a remote learning mode. Bristol President Dr. Laura Douglas says the college is opening without delay, taking into account the makeup of Bristol students compared to counterparts at other institutions.
Dr. Douglas says many students who are taking classes in-person welcome the vaccination mandate and the college remains flexible in ensuring all students can be served.
All state community colleges, including Bristol, have seen a drop in enrollment. To that end, Bristol has established a student success center to reach out to students who have failed to return to school since the onset of the pandemic.
Dr. Douglas says despite the pandemic there will still be ample opportunities for students to take part in extra-curricular in-person activities at all Bristol campus locations. Plans are also in the works for the return of an in-person commencement for the first time in two years later this spring.
