The pandemic and the state’s recovery from it dominated Governor Charlie Baker’s State of the Commonwealth address delivered last night.
The governor spent the early parts of his address looking back at how life changed for all of us 10 months ago.
The governor touched upon the many ways the state has dealt with the pandemic; from improving testing, securing PPE for healthcare workers, protecting, as best it could, those most vulnerable to infection and supporting families and small businesses impacted by COVID closures. He said the development of the vaccine shows there is light at the end of the tunnel.
The governor said once the state returns to normal, consideration needs to take place on how adapting to working through the pandemic will impact state commerce.
Governor Baker also spent time on other accomplishments over the past year:
- Overcoming revenue shortfalls to not raise taxes while providing essential state services;
- Passing needed police reform following the racial tensions resulting from the killing of George Floyd last spring;
- Moving ahead to combat climate change;
- Provide expanded economic development opportunities post-pandemic.
He also touched upon supporting future infrastructure projects, particularly one that is of interest to our region.
The governor, who continues to garner widespread support for his work, used the end of his address to touch upon the current political mood of the nation…And how his partners in government have stayed above the fray.
