There will be a mixture of uncertainty and celebration when Fall River Public School students return to the classroom on Wednesday, September 1.
Interim Superintendent Maria Pontes says a decision will be made by week’s end on the district’s guidance when it comes to whether masks will be required for students and staff. She says, regardless, the priority for the new year is to move forward with an eye on student success.
Pontes began her term as interim superintendent on July 1 following the resignation of former superintendent Matthew Malone. She says Fall River is her district, having worked in the city for many years as a teacher, principal and administrator. Even though she carries the interim tag, Pontes says she will not lead the district that way.
Pontes says she’s looking forward to welcoming all students back to in-person learning after being forced to go remote for the end of the school year two years ago and implementing a hybrid model last year due to COVID-19. The other highlight of the new year will be opening the new BMC Durfee High School…on time.
Pontes is also pleased with the recently approved three-year contract for city teachers, which will focus on improving teacher retention and recruitment.
With two weeks left before opening day, the district is still in need of filling a number of open positions.
