After nearly four decades of contamination and decay, the Fall River City Pier is open to the public. The space was dedicated over the weekend to former State Senator Thomas Norton.
Millions of dollars in state and federal aid went into the remediation and renovation of the waterfront site. Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan says the end result is another waterfront attraction for the benefit of city residents and visitors.
Also on hand for the dedication was Congressman Jim McGovern, who represented Fall River in Congress for 13 years. He says Senator Norton was the first from the area to endorse him for Congress. He called the former senator a friend and credited his style of politics for always getting things done for Fall River.
Senator Norton was a member of the House and Senate serving Fall River for 26 years from 1972 and 1998. He said he is most proud of his work delivering for the voters of Fall River and giving back through the sponsorship of long-running charitable events.
He said he is proud to be associated with the new city pier and to share its success with those he served with while in office and those who came after.
