Fall River residents can be granted an abatement on a motor vehicle if the following guidelines are met.
If the vehicle is junked, traded in, totaled, sold, donated or moved out of state, then paperwork to that effect must be provided. You must explain what happened to the vehicle, and if it is registered out of state then a copy of that registration is required.
If no paperwork is filed than you must provide a picture identification and a signed affidavit attesting to what you did with the vehicle in question.
If the plates were transferred to another vehicle, then you must get a new registration and/or if the plates were returned the plate receipt provided.
If the vehicle is stolen or lost then you must provide a plate affidavit from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
No abatement will be granted if the bill is less than $10 dollars, or the abatement is less than $50 dollars.
The deadline for filing an abatement is three (3) years from the date that the excise was due, one year from the date of payment, or whichever is latest.
