The unemployment rate in Fall River fell in November to 7.8%, down from the October rate of 8.5%.
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reports that the labor force in Fall River in November totaled 39,291 employees. 3,069 people were recorded as being unemployed. The 7.8% unemployment rate for November compares to a 3.9% unemployment rate for November of 2019.
Towns surrounding Fall River also saw a drop in their unemployment rates:
- Somerset, 5.4% (5.8% in October)
- Swansea, 4.9% (5.1% in October)
- Westport, 5.9% (6.4% in October)
- Freetown, 5.0% (5.8% in October)
Gateway Cities across Massachusetts also saw a drop in unemployment for October:
- New Bedford, 8.2% (9.1% rate for October)
- Taunton, 7.1% (8.2% in October)
- Brockton, 9.1% (10.5% in October)
- Lowell, 7.4% (7.9%% in October)
- Lawrence, 12.4% (13.9% in October)

Latest Seasonally Unadjusted Unemployment and Job Estimates for Local Labor Markets in Massachusetts
BOSTON, MA December 22, 2020 — Local unemployment rates increased in three labor market areas and decreased in twenty-one labor market areas in the state during the month of November, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported.
Compared to November 2019, the rates were up in twenty-four labor market areas.
Twelve of the fifteen areas for which job estimates are published recorded job gains in November. The largest gains occurred in the Worcester, Framingham, Springfield, and Boston-Cambridge-Newton areas. Losses occurred in the Barnstable, Haverhill-Newburyport-Amesbury, and Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford areas.
From November 2019 to November 2020, all fifteen areas lost jobs with the largest percentage losses in the Springfield, Barnstable, Haverhill-Newburyport-Amesbury, Leominster-Gardner, and Lawrence-Methuen-Salem areas.
In order to compare the statewide rate to local unemployment rates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the statewide-unadjusted unemployment rate for November was 6.2 percent.
Last week, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported the statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the month of November was 6.7 percent, 0.7 percentage points below the October rate of 7.4 percent.
The statewide seasonally adjusted jobs estimate showed a 12,200 job gain in November, and an over-the-year loss of 337,900 jobs.
The unadjusted unemployment rates and job estimates for the labor market areas reflect seasonal fluctuations and therefore may show different levels and trends than the statewide seasonally adjusted estimates.
The estimates for labor force, unemployment rates and jobs for Massachusetts are based on different statistical methodology specified by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
