BOSTON, MA December 21, 2021 — Local unemployment rates dropped in twenty labor market areas, increased in three labor market areas, and remained unchanged in one labor market area in the state during the month of November, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported.

Compared to November 2020, the rates were down in twenty-four labor market areas.

Ten metropolitan areas for which job estimates are published experienced gains over the month, in November. The largest percentage increases occurred in Brockton-Bridgewater-Easton (+0.8%), Leominster-Gardner (+0.6%), and Haverhill-Newburyport-Amesbury Town (+0.5%) areas. Barnstable had the largest percentage decrease in November, losing 2,200 jobs (-2.2%) due to seasonality.

From November 2020 to November 2021, all fifteen areas gained jobs with the largest percentage increases in Boston-Cambridge-Newton (+6.3%), Framingham (+5.8%) and New Bedford (+5.7%) areas.

In order to compare the statewide rate to local unemployment rates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the statewide-unadjusted unemployment rate for November was 4.8 percent, down three-tenths of a percentage point from October.

Last week, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported the statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the month of November was up one-tenth of a percentage point over the month at 5.4 percent.

The statewide seasonally adjusted jobs estimate showed an increase of 16,800 jobs in November, and an over-the-year gain of 196,000 jobs.

The unadjusted unemployment rates and job estimates for the labor market areas reflect seasonal fluctuations and therefore may show different levels and trends than the statewide seasonally adjusted estimates.
