BMC Durfee High School in Fall River was open on time this morning; however, not without new security measures in place.
The main entrance was the only way into the building on the Elsbree Street campus, which meant students had to stand in line outside in the cold weather as security measures were underway, that included the following:
- Security personnel using a wand to make sure students did not have any undesirable materials on them upon entering the building
- Identification checks to ensure all students belonged at the school
- An increased police presence (one student reportedly stated on social media that the presence included a K-Nine Unit)
The extra security came in light of a Snapchat photo that depicted a hand holding a BB gun with a caption that stated “At Durfee”… that was seen and reported by students Monday morning. While police & security arrested the juvenile around noontime at the perpetrator’s home after he left Durfee, classes were cancelled starting at 11:40 a.m., while parents and guardians were being notified by phone.
Media reports today stated that some of the students were upset about the new rules, but others were not, saying that they believe in the Durfee spirit.
