The Recovery Zone

Affectionately calling the Atrium of Government Center a “Recovery Zone,” The Executive Director of Recover Fall River Laurie Godwin took the podium at a morning news conference to give details of a program designed to help substance abusers and their families get the help they need. Mayor Jasiel Correia II called the news conference in a bid to give his support to a coalition of the city’s organizations that provide immediate help to those in need, including admission to detox centers.

Under the program, the Greater Fall River Health Center will open from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of every month. The so called recovery zone will be held in the atrium at Government Center and staffed by mental health professionals. The people who show up will remain anonymous, and be given immediate medical attention.

The idea sprang from the Fall River Opioid Task Force that was formed earlier this year. That group includes SSTAR, Stepping Stone, area hospitals, the police and fire departments, and other organizations. In addition, Mayor Correia says the program is volunteered-based, and is being offered without using taxpayer’s money.
