Mayor Sam Sutter announced today the availability of the applications for the John R. Correiro Scholarship. This scholarship, formerly known as the City of Fall River Scholarship, was previously funded solely through the voluntary contributions from city taxpayers and was made available every other year. The scholarship was named in Mr. Correiro’s honor shortly after his passing in August of 2004. Mr. Correiro’s family and friends raise funds in the off years so that this scholarship is made available to students on an annual basis. This year’s scholarship awards are being funded through the voluntary contributions made by the City’s taxpayers.
John R. Correiro was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School as part of the Class of 1953, and was named “Best All Around Student” by his Senior Class. He received his undergraduate degree from Merrimack College in 1961, and his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Rhode Island in 1971. He had a long and distinguished career with the Fall River Public Schools where he rose through the ranks and was appointed Superintendent of Schools in 1980.
The applications for this scholarship are available in the Mayor’s Office and the Fall River Public Library. The application deadline is Tuesday, December 15th at 5 p.m.
