The Fall River City Council Finance Committee will meet on Tuesday, November 1st to discuss a single item: How to resolve problems over removal of planters & Urns at Oak Grove Cemetery. The issue of the removal of these items caused outrage throughout the community when a directive by the Park Board ordered a clean up of the cemetery about a month ago, per cemetery regulations.

Both citizens and city councilors were upset when the massive clean up involved the removal of planters and urns that had been positioned at grave sites for long periods of time.

While a City Council Resolution previously asked that the administrator of recreational facilities, cemeteries, and trees – a newly combined position – attend the meeting along with other personnel, that job has recently changed.

Nancy Smith, who has served as parks and recreation director for decades asked to be removed from that combined job that includes departments of cemeteries and trees, according to Faust Fiore, special assistant to Mayor Jasiel Correia II.

The special one-item meeting on November first will be held at Government Center beginning at 5:30 p.m., and is open to the public.
