Businesses or individuals that want to catch up on back taxes while saving on penalties can do so during the Tax Amnesty Program sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. The program will kick off Friday, April 1st and run until May 31st. During this period, interested parties can file delinquent returns or amend previous tax filings online.

Anyone who has not currently registered with the DOR, or has not filed a tax return that was due on or before December 31st, 2015 is eligible for the program. There are, however, exceptions to the rule. For example, individuals or businesses that are, or have been, involved in a tax-related criminal investigation are exempt, as are those who have filed a fraudulent amnesty return.

The last time the program was offered to Massachusetts residents was back in 2002. According to the DOR, there are no plans in the near future to offer the opportunity again.
