Despite Social Distancing, Summer Reading Goes On!

This year’s health threats mean the large gatherings of summers past can’t happen, but the Fall River Public Library is still offering a summer reading program—with curbside pickup of books and crafts, virtual storytimes and special programs, and a new way to log books online.

This year’s summer reading theme is “Imagine Your Story.” The library will provide books and weekly take-home crafts to spark children’s imaginations and will offer weekly filmed storytimes that kids can watch through our web site, Facebook page, or YouTube channel, as well as special events that will be livestreamed.

Here’s how it works: Each week, we will have a new craft available. Parents can call the library, arrange for a time to pick up the craft, and then stop by the library to pick it up. Each craft kit contains all the materials and directions needed to make the craft at home. (For some crafts that are a little more complicated, we will film videos kids and parents can watch and follow along with at home). Our first summer craft, just in time for Fourth of July, is a patriotic turtle ornament that can be picked up during the week of June 29 – July 3, 2020.

When picking up crafts, parents can also take advantage of our new library take-out and Book Bundles services! For library take-out, you choose the items you want from our catalog, reserve them online or by phone, then call the library to make an appointment for contactless pickup at the door. For Book Bundles, parents can fill out an online form or call the library, answer a few questions about a child’s age and reading interests, and our library team will put together a bundle of 10 children’s books chosen just for them. This summer, we will use a new online app called Beanstack to make it easy for kids to keep track of their reading.

Parents can feel reassured, knowing that all materials returned to the library are quarantined for 72 hours before being checked out to someone else. According to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, testing of typical library materials (books and DVDs) with the COVID-19 virus found the virus undetectable after one day on the covers of hardback and softback books as well as DVD cases, and undetectable on the paper inside of a book after three days.

The library is currently open for contactless pickup 9-5, Monday through Friday.
