Democrat Tanisha Sullivan has a tall task ahead of her in this year’s state election, unseating seven-term incumbent secretary of state William Galvin.
Ms. Sullivan has roots in Brockton, practiced law for 20 years, and has served as the chief equity officer in the Boston Public Schools and currently is the volunteer president of the NAACP Chapter in Boston. She feels the secretary of state’s office has been slow to evolve to today’s needs as the Commonwealth’s official record keeper, business regulator and elections officer.
A key plank in Ms. Sullivan’s platform is strengthening the state’s elections laws to grant more Baystate residents the opportunity to vote. She says the passage of this year’s VOTES Act expanding mail and early voting is a good start, but more must be done.
Ms. Sullivan says Massachusetts, through the secretary of state’s office, needs to do a better job of making it easier, and more affordable, to start a small business.
Ms. Sullivan says as the state’s chief records officer, the secretary of state must ensure that access to information on state government is accessible and transparent.
