March 6th has finally arrived, and registered voters in Fall River are being urged to get out and vote in today’s special election. Board of Election Chair Liz Camara believes that 32 percent of the city’s approximately 49 thousand registered voters will head to the polls that close at 8:00 p.m. At issue is whether taxpayers want to override a Proposition Two and a Half/Debt Exclusion to help pay for the city’s $98 million dollar portion of the approximately $263 million dollar construction plan to build a new BMC Durfee High School
“If you want your voice to be heard one way or another you need to get out and vote,” Camara said.
Representatives for both sides of the issue agree that a new high school needs to be built: however, the rift centers around the cost to the city. School Committee member Paul Coogan says the high school students need to be educated in an updated facility and maintains the current structure cannot be repaired. While opponent Robert Camara agrees that a new school is needed, is concerned that the taxpayers will suffer with the proposed tax hike that stands at $115 dollars per resident/family each year if the ballot question passes.
