MassDOT and MBTA are designing a new rail connection making use of the existing MBTA Stoughton Commuter Rail Line. Design for this route is currently 15% complete. In addition, MassDOT and MBTA are currently considering an alternative rail route between Boston and the South Coast that could potentially be designed and constructed more quickly than can the Stoughton route. That alternative may nix the Stoughton Route and replace it with a Middleboro/Fall River service.
Fall River Vice President of the Office of Economic Development Ken Fiola is all for the local route.
“Rail service in and out of Boston will only enhance our economic viability,” he says. “If approved, the upgrading of the current rail tracks can begin as early as this spring.”
MassDOT is holding a series of meetings to update the public on the status of all elements of the South Coast Rail project and to discuss the next steps. MassDOT and MBTA invite all members of the public with an interest in this project to join us as we seek public comments and answer your questions.
Tonight’s hearing will be held in the lounge in Building G at the 777 Elsbree Street BCC campus beginning at 6:30 p.m.
