Development in Fall River’s south end is looking good these days. That from city development officials who say three new stores have been open in that section, and there a few vacancies along Plymouth Avenue, Rhode Island Avenue, and William S. Canning Boulevard. The McDonald’s Restaurant nearby is also getting a facelift.

Meanwhile, the New Harbour Mall is now just an empty shell surrounded with heavy equipment, and a Market Basket store is under construction on the site where there used to be a Kmart department store. CEA Group of Cambridge announced plans to transform the New Harbour Mall to the South Coast Market place, with two dozen stores, a ten (10) screen movie theater, restaurants, banks, and dry cleaners.

According to Executive Vice President of the Fall River Office of Economic Development Ken Fiola, one main driving project in the south end, is the South Coast Marketplace, which is expected to transform the former Harbour Mall.

In addition, Twin River Management Group is building a small casino on a lot in Tiverton just outside of Fall river which, Fiola says, will bring traffic to the south end as well.
