UPDATE: This article has been edited to clarify the specifics of the Massachusetts SNAP Restaurant Program.
Fall River residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits can use their money for a meal at Faneek’s Coney Island in the city’s south end.
The local eatery last month became part of the Massachusetts SNAP Restaurant Program, a pilot project that connects local restaurants with individuals who are unable to prepare their own meals.
Faneek’s has been in Ms. Carpenter’s family since 1979 with a focus on supporting those who live and work in Fall River.
Ms. Carpenter says the restaurant hosts a special merchant device, similar to a credit card machine, that can scan residents’ EBT cards to purchase meals.
Ms. Carpenter says nine other states deploy a similar SNAP restaurant program, including in nearby Rhode Island. She is hopeful the program will continue once the pilot phase is complete.
