South End cafe owner Christopher Silvia officially launched his campaign for mayor today.

Mr. Silvia has been a catalyst in the city since he opened Christopher’s Cafe over two years ago, by initiating neighborhood clean-ups, administering food and supplies for the homeless, and collecting funds for those in need through his nonprofit organization, Act Up Fall River.

He made his announcement outside a shuttered storefront on Pleasant Street, where he held one of his first clean-ups two years ago.

Mr. Silvia says his goal is to rebuild the city from the ground up.

Mr. Silvia says it’s time to make meaningful changes to how city government operates.

Mr. Silvia will be one of five candidates on the preliminary election ballot for mayor on September 16. He’ll be joined by incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan and challengers Carlos Cesar, Gabriel Boomer Amaral, and Michael Vandal.
