Here are the events scheduled to take place at Heritage State Park for the month of September.

Saturday, September 4th

FALL RIVER GOES TO THE MOVIES, 8:30 am—3:00 pm, In the Theater in the Visitor Center

Beat the heat and join us in our air-conditioned Visitor Center Theater for a full day marathon of films about Fall River. It’s Labor Day Weekend, so come learn about the hardworking textile workers who made Fall River the number one textile city in America. Watch “The Fabric of Fall River.” Discover the little-known history of abolitionist Fall River with “Safe Houses: Fall River and the Underground Railroad.” Sail on “The Fall River Line” and more. The films will be shown in rotation. See them all.

Cool, educational fun for the whole family! No food is allowed in the Theater.

Saturday, September 11

VISITOR CENTER NAMING CEREMONY 12:00 noon, Fall River Heritage Park Visitor Center

The public is cordially invited to attend a ceremony naming the Visitor Center at Fall River Heritage State Park in honor of Fall River native Captain Thomas J. Hudner, Jr., a Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Captain Hudner was an officer of the United States Navy and a naval aviator.

SPINDLE CITY FESTIVAL BOARDWALK RAMBLE 12:00 noon—2:30 pm, On the Boardwalk.

The Spindle City Festival’s Boardwalk Ramble will feature free musical performances from noon—2:30 pm on the boardwalk at Fall River Heritage State Park. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon as you soak up the sunshine, enjoy the beauty of Battleship Cove and catch some tunes. This free performance is brought to you courtesy of the Narrows Center for the Performing Arts.

MILKWEEDS AND MONARCHS, 11:00 am At the Pollinator Garden

Do you know that without milkweeds, there would be no monarch butterflies? Join us at the Pollinator Garden to learn about the special relationship between caterpillars, butterflies and their host plants. We’ll also discuss the importance of pollinators to your favorite fruits and vegetables. Join us anytime between 11:00 am and noon. Sponsored in part by Creative Arts Network (CAN).

A Ladybug’s Life STORYWALK®On the Boardwalk, near the picnic area.

Visit the park to share the book “A Ladybug’s Life” by author John Himmelman as you stroll along the boardwalk. The StoryWalk® concept was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and was developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, Kellogg-Hubbard Library. The goal is to engage families in reading and enjoying nature at the same time.

LOUIS FUERTES BIRD ART EXHIBIT, 8:00 am—3:00 pm, Visitor Center Lobby

In the 1920’s Edward Howe Forbush, the first Massachusetts State Ornithologist and one of the founders of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, commissioned Louis Agassiz Fuertes to create illustrations for his book “Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States.” This exhibit is on loan from the Commonwealth Museum in Boston through October 1, 2021.

FILM: SAFE HOUSES: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN FALL RIVER, 3:00 pm, Visitor Center Theater

Discover the hidden history of Fall River and its role in the Underground Railroad. Meet abolitionist Elizabeth Buffum Chase, one of the most dynamic figures in Fall River history. See the houses and streets that welcomed escaped formerly enslaved people. Running time: 20 minutes.

FILM: THE FABRIC OF FALL RIVER, 11:00 am & 2:00 pm, Visitor Center Theater

The newly restored film The Fabric of Fall River: Self-Portrait of a City is shown daily at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center Theater. “The Fabric of Fall River” showcases the rich history of Fall River from the First Peoples, through the cotton mill era, to the needle trades of the 1980s.

FACES OF FALL RIVER PAST EXHIBIT, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm

Meet the people of Fall River through a gallery of classic black and white photographs from the textile era. Featured are many photos by labor activist/sociologist/photographer Lewis Hine.

THREADS OF FALL RIVER EXHIBIT, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm

“The Threads of Fall River” is a permanent exhibit celebrating the cultural, ethnic and industrial history of Fall River and its preeminence as the textiles hub of America.
