A state senate’s committee held a hearing this week in Taunton looking at the state of healthcare in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Input was sought on access to healthcare in the region and ways it can be approved.
Much of the discussion focused on the future of Steward Healthcare, which operates 8 facilities in eastern Massachusetts including St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. The for-profit organization is looking to divest its operation in Massachusetts as it faces financial struggles.
Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services Katie Walsh told the committee that the Healey Administration is closely monitoring the Steward situation to ensure healthcare coverage remains at current levels
The SouthCoast lags behind the rest of the state regarding access to affordable healthcare and staffing per capita.
