According to a report in today’s Fall River Herald News the city has begun a search for a new director of economic development. The news comes before a contract has been signed between the Fall River Redevelopment Authority and the city.
Reportedly the City’s Administrator Cathy Ann Viveiros has stated that an agreement between the RDA and the city is being reviewed by the independent agency’s attorney. There is also an item on the agenda for tonight’s RDA meeting for discussion on the RDA’s hiring desire. The plan is to employ a new economic development director who would be an employee of the city, and paid by funds through the Community Development Agency’s Federal Community Development Block Grant. That person would then be in charge of overseeing the future plans to foster economic development and business growth in Fall River.
Since the 1970’s, The Fall River Office of Economic Development, a non-profit organization considered the driving force behind economic development efforts in the city, was partially funded through CDA grant monies, but over the last year Mayor Correia and FROED have been at odds, with the mayor opting to create a city-run economic development office.
