The Fall River School Committee held a special meeting last night for an update on the remediation of mold found in two city schools.
Toward the end of last school year, complaints were filed describing mold found in classrooms at the Letourneau and Greene Elementary Schools. Over the summer the district has been working to remove the mold in time for the new school year to open on Wednesday. Ceiling tile sections and drywall have been replaced where there was evidence of mold.
Certified industrial hygienist Phillip Terrell was hired to test air quality and supervise abatement measures to ensure students and teachers returned to a safe environment. He told the committee that activity was sufficient to open the schools as scheduled.
Remediation work will continue at the schools through the end of the week. The construction has negatively impacted teachers’ ability to prepare for the new year.
Ongoing work will also include examination of each school’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to guard against the return of mold spores.
