Former longtime state representative and Fall River Mayor Robert Correia has passed away at the age of 82.

Correia served as state representative for 30 years, winning a special election in June of 1977 following the passing of State Representative Matthew Kuss.

Correia served one term as mayor, winning the election in 2007, defeating fellow State Representative David Sullivan. Correia lost re-election in 2009, finishing third in the preliminary election to William Flanagan and Cathy Ann Viveiros.

Mayor Paul Coogan issued the following statement on Correia’s passing:

“Sad Day. Regrettably this morning the City of Fall River received the sad news regarding the passing of former longtime State Representative and Mayor Robert Correia. His many years of dedicated service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the City of Fall River have left a lasting legacy. He was a very good friend.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Correia Family at this very difficult time.”
