River to Recovery, a non-profit agency that offers help to addicts and their families in the city, has new temporary space in which to continue servicing those in need. According to a board member, who asked not to be identified fearing retribution from city officials, a property owner has provided the space at 1 West Street. People in need of support from meetings can access the building via the Weaver Street Entrance.
The temporary meeting spot is not far from the location where River to Recovery was located for the past two years until city building inspectors shut down the operation at their former headquarters at a mill at Probber Lane and Ace Street a month ago.
The inspection was initiated by the fire department as part of an annual routine of city mill buildings. Director of Inspectional Services Joseph Biszko ordered the space occupied by River to Recovery to be shut down after finding, among the violations, that the portion of the mill does not have the proper means of a second egress required by state law.
