Here’s a report on how the School Committee Fiance Committee played out on September 30th.
According to Chairwoman Melissa Panchely-Karam, the Greene school has three open classrooms because of preschools moving to other schools.  The finance subcommitee is recommending that we hire three teachers for those classrooms to reduce classroom size at Greene, because 95% of their 1-5 classes have 25 or more students.

“70% of Letourneau classes have 25 or more students in grades 1-5.  We did not recommend anything to the full committee on that as there are no empty classrooms, but the principal will present a plan to the full committee at the next meeting to use the remainder of the $378,289 we were looking to allocate last night to reduce student to adult ratios with a combination of paraprofessionals and interventionists.”

In addition, the end of the year report was presented.  There is a discrepancy of about $300,000 between the school numbers and the city numbers due to a different percentage being used for indirect costs being charged to the school.  The schools have asked for an extension on filing the end of year report so the schools and city can get on the same page.
