The Fall River School Committee this week voted to make amendments to Superintendent Matthew Malone’s contract following an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate and harassing remarks to school department staff. This story was first reported by the Herald News.
The Herald News reports that the changes in the superintendent’s contract alters his compensation package and adds language allowing him to be terminated without cause under “certain circumstances”. Specific details as to the change in compensation were not immediately made available to the Herald News.
Following an executive session to discuss the amended contract, committee members Kevin Aguiar and Paul Hart came out as the only members to vote against the changes.
Voting to approve the changes were committee members Mark Costa, Tom Khoury, Joshua Hetzler and Mimi Larrivee.
Mayor Paul Coogan, chair of the committee, did not vote on the matter recusing himself following a state ethics commission opinion that advised that as an elected official, combined with his brother Thomas serving directly under Superintendent Malone as executive director of human resources, disqualifies him from voting on the superintendent’s possible termination.
