Fall River State Representative Alan Silvia was one of only 12 Democrats to oppose a sweeping gun reform bill passed by the House last month.
Representative Silvia says Massachusetts already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, and his vote was based on what he says was the overwhelming opposition he received from those he represents.
Along with voting based on the wishes of his constituents, Representative Silvia also feels some of the measures in the bill go too far and will negatively impact lawful gun owners.
Representative Silvia says he has voted for gun reform legislation in the past and there are items in the current bill he feels he could support.
Representative Silvia says police departments across the Commonwealth, including in Fall River, were in opposition to the bill. He believes the next steps in preventing gun violence need to take place in the courts.
The gun reform legislation passed the House by a vote of 120-38. The Senate is currently working on its version of a gun reform bill but will likely not come up for a vote until at least early in 2024.
