Growing up in Fall River and now having worked in the local media for over 35 years, I always showed reverence for the talents and longevity of Hector “Happy Hec” Gauthier.
Everything you have read about the generosity and accomplishments of the longtime morning host at WSAR Radio, who passed away on Friday, is far outweighed by his love for the City of Fall River and the respect he showed for his audience and those he met in person.
I worked with Hec and WSAR on a number of occasions since beginning my work at FRCMedia 23 years ago. I am also one of the thousands of Fall Riverites who grew up starting my day listening to Hec before heading to school on weekdays in the late 1970’s.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Hec in July on a story we prepared to celebrate the 100th anniversary of WSAR. During the interview I asked Hec what motivated him to continue to host a morning radio program into his eighth decade of life.
Though we mourn his passing I am sure there is a morning radio slot open for Hec at the radio station just within the boundaries of the Pearly Gates. Thank you for everything you’ve done for Fall River, Hec. Rest in Peace.
