The owner of Fall River’s Nathaniel B. Borden School has filed for a permit to tear down the building, and The Preservation Society of Fall River is asking for community support to oppose the demolition.

“The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and meets various criteria for preservation, including its architectural style and importance to the community, having served as Lizzie Borden’s elementary school,” according to a position statement released by the society.

“The owner is set to appear at the June 18 Historical Commission meeting and we encourage any concerned residents to attend.”

Located on Morgan Street, the red brick school was built in 1867 and 1868 and was named after Nathaniel Briggs Borden, a prominent businessman and abolitionist who served as the third mayor of Fall River. It closed in 2007.

The Preservation Society works to preserve historically and architecturally significant properties in Fall River.  For more information, call 508-673-4841.
