Fall River Mayor Sam Sutter announced the city’s plans for handling the logistics of the upcoming Offshore Powerboat Association races in theTaunton River. The races are scheduled to be held this weekend, but are not considered part of the 50th anniversary of the USS Battleship celebration.
In an effort to keep traffic moving, and residents safe, the mayor met with city officials, including Fall River Harbormaster Bob Smith, EMS Director Tim Oliveira, and the city’s Director of Emergency Management Richard Aquiar, among others this week to finalize plans.
When the mayor discussed the powerboat races with organizers a few months back, “…I knew immediately that this event would both be great for the city and very challenging to organize because of its magnitude,” Sutter said during a news conference.
Despite the challenges, the city has made preparations to help drivers navigate their way to the waterfront attractions by displaying signs at strategic locations to direct them to the easiest routes to the waterfront. Because parking will be difficult, the city has formulated a comprehensive plan to help drivers find their way to parking spots.
