For over 30 years the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has used the second Saturday in May to collect non-perishable food items for the local needy as part of its Stamp Out Hunger campaign. And with the help of local sponsors, Fall River area postal workers will doing their part.

The United Way of Greater Fall River, Blount Fine Foods, BankFive and Saint Anne’s Hospital are providing support locally for this year’s drive. 54,000 branded bags have been distributed to homes in Fall River and Somerset. Paul Knarr, President of NALC Local 51, says the goal is to surpass the amount of food collected a year ago, which totaled 63,000 pounds.

Fourteen food pantries across Fall River and Somerset will be the beneficiaries of the donations. The need is acute as Bristol County is one of the highest food-insecure regions in Massachusetts.

Mr. Knarr thanked the management of the U.S. Postal Service and the carriers for donating their time and effort to making the annual food drive a success.
