The Fall River Police Department began an initiative this week geared to rid the Quequechan River Rail Trail of criminal activity, at a span from Rodman Street to Brayton Avenue.

The initiative, titled Operation Clear Path, launched in the early morning hours on Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of 38 individuals, 33 of whom were camped out on the rail trail.

Police Chief Kelly Furtado says over the last year, her department has assisted the city in providing compassionate outreach to the homeless across Fall River, but conditions on the rail trail have deteriorated.

The chief says city ordinances make it easier to investigate and make arrests in public spaces across the city.

Police say Tuesday’s arrests on the rail trail are just the first phase of Operation Clear Path, and they remain committed to ensuring the public remains safe at all city parks and other public spaces.
