Fall River mayoral candidate City Councilor Linda Pereira today disclosed her plans to improve public safety within the city.
Speaking at a press conference on the corner of Weetamoe and North High Street, the sight of a shooting spree last summer, Pereira unveiled a five-point crime-fighting plan, focusing on increasing police presence throughout the city while also sharing resources with partners in government and utilizing the latest in technology.
Pereira’s plan includes:
- Return the police department to a nearly full complement of officers, hiring five new patrol officers in each of the next five years raising the department’s force to 260, up from the current level of 232;
- Prioritize current personnel resources at the police department to ensure more officers are out on the street;
- Expand collaborations and cooperation with county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies;
- Upkeep and expansion of current cutting-edge crime-fighting technology. These include the restoration and expansion of the city’s “shot spotter” program and the repair and reactivation of some 1000 cameras that aid in fighting crime;
- Provide a better source of preparation and prevention within the community through education in local schools and the implementation of her economic development plan.
Pereira criticized incumbent Mayor Jasiel Correia for using statistics in making public safety decisions rather than listening to the needs of the residents of Fall River.\
