According to an article in the Fall River Reporter, a peaceful protest is planned over the weekend by residents who are against the decision to close St. Anne’s Church. The event is scheduled to take place Sunday at noon in front of the parish on Middle Street across from Kennedy Park.
The last Mass is scheduled to be held on November 25th, 2018, after which parishioners will be advised to attend other nearby churches for worship.
The Diocese of Fall River made the decision to close the church after learning it would cost $13.5 million to repair the aging structure. Even though it would be $5 million to do initial public safety repairs, church officials say there are not enough parishioners to consider keeping St. Anne’s open. According to the report, the residents who plan to protest want the Diocese to know what is being taken away from them by closing the church, which has been an iconic symbol in the city for over a hundred years.
