Old Police Station Up For Discussion Tonight

The abandoned Fall River Police Station located on Bedford Street in Fall River is up for sale, and has been for several years, without any buyers. At stake are various environmental issues, and other roadblocks. The reason for the building still sitting idle will be addressed by the City Council Finance Subcommittee at its regular meeting tonight.

Earlier this year, the Correia administration hired Scott Veloso, a partner with Penrose Commercial, to help market and sell the Bedford Street Property, and the fire-ravaged King Phillips Mill complex on Kilburn Street. Veloso, who earned $24 thousand dollars for his marketing services, was invited to tonight’s Finance Committee meeting, although it is still unclear on whether or not he will attend.

A letter was sent via certified mail to Veloso on February 13th, but there has not yet been a response, although City Councilor Cliff Ponte tells FRC Media News he believes Veloso will be a no show.

Ray Mitchell sponsored a resolution to invite Veloso to this evening’s meeting to discuss the progress of his marketing work, since city councilors have been complaining for months that they’ve been kept in the dark on how Velos’s compensation was actually spent.

According to City Administrator Cathy Ann Viveiros, she had previously spoken with Veloso who stated he wasn’t “comfortable disclosing the names of individuals he has been working with,” claiming that some of them may still be interested in purchasing one or both properties.

Tonight’s Finance Subcommittee meeting will be held at Government Center at 6:00 p.m. followed by the full council meeting.
