A special meeting by the Board of Park Commissioners will be held Wednesday to address the sometimes contentious issues surrounding city cemeteries, namely Oak Grove.
Since the spring of this year Oak Grove has been in the spotlight when grave site decorations were removed, and more recently ceramic flower planters were taken from graves, some of which have been in place for years, even decades. Approximately 200 of the flower boxes and urns were removed even though they were actually in the cemetery’s perpetual care.
In addition to mourners being upset, the city council also expressed anger and indignation at what had occurred. As a result, Mayor Jasiel Correia had made leadership changes to the board that oversees the cemeteries, appointed two new members who can represent historical and veteran issues, and has asked the commission to review all of its present regulations.
The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. this Wednesday, November 16th in the council hearing room at Government Center. All are welcome to attend.
