Contract negotiations for School Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown continue, but so far a proposed contract has not been produced. If it were up to School Committee members Joe Martins and Gabriel Andrade, Ms. Mayo-Brown would not get her current contract renewed, let alone be offered a new one with an increase in salary.
“Under her administration I find that the State Department of Education’s official ranking off our school system is not up to par,” Martins tells frcconnect.org. “As a matter of fact we are among the worst school systems in the entire state.”
An example Martins gives is that BMC Durfee High school received a score of 9 last year.
“That means that in 2014, high school students in comparable institutions are getting a 91% better education than those in Fall River,” he says.
Andrade agrees, adding that he is not impressed with the MCAS scores under the Mayo-Brown administration either.
“MCAS scores are too low in the city, and our students can be better educated, partially because moral among school administrators under the Mayo-Brown administration is poor and that ultimately affects the students,” he says. “None of the employees will come out and say this directly for fear of job loss, but low moral throughout the educational system is the word I’m hearing on the street.”
Mayo-Brown is asking for a salary increase to remain in her current position, but just how much can not be disclosed because of the on going contract negotiations. Mayo-Brown is also a finalist for another position as school superintendent in Barnstable. Her current contract expires at the end of the fiscal year on June 30th, 2016.
