The over ten-year plan to reconstruct Route 79 and Davol Street in Fall River is nearly complete. Now begins the process of deciding what should be built on the 19-plus acres of land freed up along the waterfront.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) held a meeting yesterday morning, opening up its request for information from residents, businesses, and interested developers on what they’d like to see on the site. The hope is to issue a request for proposals for developers to submit plans for the land later this spring.
Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan says the meeting is the first step in gaining public input into the future of the waterfront.
Last year, the Fall River Redevelopment Authority completed a master plan with housing, commercial, hospitality, and open space opportunities.
Even though MassDOT owns the land and plans sell the parcels to developers, Mayor Coogan hopes the city may still be in line to play a bigger role in those decisions.
MassDOT is hopeful that it can begin negotiating with developers on plans for the site by later this summer.
