Public school students in Fall River head off for the first day of school on Wednesday September 9th.
For Durfee High School students, the start of the school year will come with some changes. According to School Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown, administrators have put new schedule and class attendance rules in place.
Unlike previous years, students will have a five-period-a-day schedule, with 72 minute long classes, instead of a seven-period-a day schedule with shorter 50 minute classes.
Ms. Mayo-Brown says some major classes like English, math, and science will meet all year long, while other electives will run for a semester.
Classes will run on a ten day cycle with Monday’s not always being the first day of the cycle, she adds.
Durfee’s class schedule will run on an A-B rotation, with the days being labeled red & black to symbolism the high school’s colors.
For example, Spanish may be ever red day, while PE will be on every black day.
The change came so that students, especially juniors, will not be boxed out of taking electives. In addition, the longer classes will mean students will have more in depth learning time, Ms. Mayo-Brown contends.
