The Bristol County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held a candlelight vigil last evening to bring awareness to those struggling with mental illness and to remember those who have passed.

Chapter President Brenda Venice says the focus of the event is to engage in heartfelt, yet direct discussions on the impact mental illness has within the community, and to remove the stigma around it.

The ceremony included the reading of the names of those in Greater Fall River who died due to their mental illness. It also paid tribute to those who are “Heroes in the Fight”, working with NAMI in support of its mission. One of those individuals this year is State Senator Michael Rodrigues, who says more people each day have become aware of the plight of those battling mental illness, but more work needs to be done.
