With COVID-19 infection rates improving, Fall River Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Matthew Malone has decided that more students will be returning to in-person learning beginning Monday, February 8.

In a letter emailed to parents yesterday, Malone said the city has seen two consecutive weeks of a marked reduction in COVID infection rates.  That, combined with the expansion of vaccine distribution and the prevalence of PPE and cleaning supplies in schools, Dr. Malone made the decision to bring some students back to the classroom who have been learning remote since just before Christmas.  Currently, just ESL students and those with special needs have been experiencing in-person instruction

Dr. Malone is looking to slowly re-institute the hybrid model of in-person and remote learning initially instituted in the fall.  That plan consisted of four cohorts;

  • Cohort A being those ESL and special needs students.
  • Cohort B are students who have chosen to remain learning remote.
  • Cohorts C and D are students who spend a portion of time in class and remote.

Under the plan unveiled yesterday, beginning Monday, February 8, students in Cohort C in grades K-5 will return for in-person learning, along with all students in Cohort A.  Cohorts B & D students in grades K-5 will remain remote, as will all students in grades 6-8 and 9-12.

All students will be off the week of February 15 for winter break.

On Monday, February 22, K-5 students in Cohort D will be in school along with all Cohort A students. All other students will be learning remotely.

On Monday, March 1, Cohort C students in grades K-8 will return to the classroom, along with all Cohort A students.  The following week, on Monday, March 8, K-8 students in Cohort D will be in school along with all Cohort A students.  The rotation of students in those grades will then continue until further notice.

Under the current plan, all students in grades 9-12 will remain remote until further notice.
