The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has released each school district’s 2024 Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test results. Scores at Fall River’s elementary and middle schools held steady while there was a decline for tenth graders at Durfee High School.

The MCAS tests students’ proficiency in English Language Arts, mathematics and science and technology in grades three through eight and tenth grade in high school.

At the elementary and middle school levels, 20 percent of city students either exceeded or met expectations in English. That is down from 22 percent in 2023. The statewide average is 39 percent.

In math, 20 percent of students exceeded or met expectations, up from 19 percent last year. The statewide average is 41 percent.

In grades five through eight, students taking the science test exceeded or met expectations at an 18 percent rate, the same as a year ago. That compares to 42 percent statewide.

The schools with the highest scores within the district were James Tansey Elementary, Frank Silvia Elementary, and Spencer Borden Elementary. Tansey exceeded expectations in both English and math.

Tenth graders at Durfee saw scores decline in all three subjects from a year ago. In English, 31 percent of students exceeded or met expectations, down from 38 percent in 2023. 57 percent of tenth graders statewide met those standards.

In math, Durfee students exceeded or met expectations at 15 percent, down from 22 percent last year and compared to 48 percent statewide.

17 percent of tenth graders met the standards in science, down from 22 percent in 2023 and 49 percent statewide.

Mayor Paul Coogan says the school district continues to work toward improving MCAS scores at all grade levels.

Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School tenth graders exceeded state standards in English, with 67 percent of students exceeding or meeting expectations. Math and science scores were in line with state averages with Diman scoring 48 percent and 49 percent respectively.

At the Argosy Collegiate Charter School, students in grades six through eight met the standards in English at 14 percent (same as 2023), math at 17 percent (9 percent in 2023) and science at 19 percent (12 percent in 2023). Tenth graders scored 35 percent in English (40 percent in 2023), 30 percent in math (32 percent in 2023) and 22 percent in science (27 percent in 2023)

At the Atlantis Charter School, elementary and middle school students met the standards in English at 26 percent (27 percent in 2023), math at 21 percent (same as 2023) and science at 28 percent (26 percent in 2023). Tenth graders scored 46 percent in English (40 percent in 2023), 38 percent in math (24 percent in 2023) and 29 percent in science (18 percent in 2023).
